About & Legacy

A family ranch since 1904 and five decades of Western filmmaking — built by John Scott.

A working ranch shaped by filmmaking

John Scott’s family homesteaded near Longview in 1904 after emigrating from the Orkney Islands, Scotland. The ranch has worked cattle and horses ever since — and, from the late 1960s, has also worked for the camera.

John started doing stunts in 1969 on Little Big Man, co-founded Stunts Canada in 1974 and went on to head-wrangle productions including Unforgiven and Legends of the Fall. His career spans dozens of credits as a stunt performer and animal wrangler, from Alberta to New Zealand, and he is still on set today.

Everything in one place

What began as horses for hire became a complete Western resource: standing sets, 100+ horses and livestock, one of Western Canada’s largest collections of wagons and buggies, a props warehouse, studio and workshops, and a crew who understand how productions run. Producers call because they can solve the whole Western with one conversation.

Recognition

In 2025 John Scott was appointed to the Alberta Order of Excellence, the province’s highest honour, for his contribution to Alberta’s film industry and Western heritage.
